ROMERO & JULIET Synopsis

It’s September, Friday the 13th, 1985. Zombies despise the filmmaker George Romero for revealing their existence with his famous movie, Night of the Living Dead. They are fighting for societal acceptance and are opposed by factions who see them as a threat to the country and to young people.

Anti-Zombie Leader Sergeant George heads The Regional Guard. His late wife (a distant relative of George Romero) was killed by zombies. Their son, Romero, is a young Regional Guardsman. Romero’s cousin Cutie O is a flamboyant club kid who takes Romero with him to Deadstock, a music festival featuring Pop superstar Notre Dame (think Madonna.) She is known for promoting (some say exploiting) zombie culture in her music.

Also attending the concert is a 16-year-old zombie girl named Juliet. She is the only zombie ever born to two zombie parents. The zombies plan to announce her birth and existence at the end of the festival to try to sway public opinion in their favor.

Romero and Juliet meet at the concert. Despite learning Romero is considered a deadly enemy to her people, Juliet tracks him down to his guard tower at the local military station. They quickly fall in love.

Juliet’s surrogate mother Nessa knows Juliet is unhappy about her arranged marriage to Punxsutawney, an unappealing zombie. Knowing there is no future as a couple for Juliet and Romero, Nessa decides that Juliet should have a fun and meaningless assignation to get her youthful hormones out of her system before she marries Punx.

Romero’s father has learned where the zombies commune is and plans to raid it and annihilate them before the weekend is through to avenge the deaths of some of his men who died in riots the week of Deadstock.

The zombie twin sister of a militant and angry zombie named Richmond was among the casualties of the riots. Richmond is a close friend of both Juliet and Nessa. She rallies the zombies to plan an attack on the humans so that a new civilization where zombies are in control can be established.

Romero’s “Uncle” Larry was a chaplain, medic, and CIA operative. He reveals to Romero that zombieism was created by a virus developed for biological warfare. He has been working for years and has developed a vaccine/cure that might make zombies human again.

Kids in love. Disapproving families and societies. A blood born virus. People doing the wrong things for the right reasons. Armed conflict between opposing sides. Does love have a chance? (have you ever seen ROMEO & JULIET or WEST SIDE STORY?)

But don’t worry. While the plot is inspired by ROMEO & JULIET - it has some unexpected twists and turns. It’s not anyone’s grandfather’s version of the story. It is a LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS-like cocktail of Shakespeare, B Movies, Horror, Romance, and 80s Music. Love bites!

The original score and sounds are inspired by 80s musical legends Madonna, Michael Jackson, George Michael, Boy George, Queen Latifah, Heart, Bon Jovi, Laura Branigan, Paul Simon, Jim Steinman and more.
